Can Someone See You through Your Phone Camera?
If you're not careful, Yes your smartphone camera can be used to spy on you.
For most people, the thought of having your phone camera hacked is a scary thought. It's only normal that we don't like the idea of being watched all the time, and we particularly don't want to be watched.
It's nothing new to be concerned about our devices' cameras spying on us; people have been taping or using webcam covers for their laptop webcams for years.
Most people, however, will be surprised to know that commercially available spyware exists that is explicitly designed to hack a mobile device's camera without the user's knowledge. Because of the accessibility of these relatively simple devices, the technological skill required to hack a victim's phone and use the camera to spy on them has been significantly reduced.
In theory, all that is required is for someone to install this spyware on the target computer and follow the developer's instructions.
Naturally, this is based on the computer and the operating system it is using. If the computer is running Android, installing spyware and bypassing the built-in security features can be much simpler. It can be more complicated with iOS, and a hacker will have to ‘jailbreak' the system to get around the built-in security.
On the market, there are a variety of spyware devices, all of which compete based on the functionality they can provide to their users. These features are often used by hackers to blackmail their victims. Alternatively, they will sell their images and videos on the black market. Some of these characteristics include:
Photo capture:
This is done remotely, and the victim is fully aware of the situation. All of the images are automatically transferred to a cloud server and are accessible from anywhere in the world.
Video recording:
Flexi SPY, for example, may use the phone's camera to capture a video. It's discreet – the video is filmed without the victim's knowledge. After that, the video can be directly submitted to an online database.
Remote camera monitoring:
One of the most troubling features, apart from the ability to capture video and images, is the ability to see someone ‘live' through their phone's camera.
