Can People Spy On You Through a Laptop Camera?
For work, research, or virtual socializing, most of us have a camera built into our phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop webcam. Unfortunately, this access makes us vulnerable to a form of online attack known as camfecting.
According to widespread opinion, bad hackers are gaining access to the cameras on our computers, smartphones, tablets, and even home protection systems.
In camfecting attacks, there are two typical acquisition techniques. The first is known as a RAT (Remote Administration Tool), and the second happens when malicious people provide fake "remote tech help."
Trojan horse malware is a malicious code embedded inside seemingly innocent files that, once downloaded, will do its job and give the wrong people backdoor access to your computer. We must all become conscious that our every move is being watched.
When a Trojan virus infects a system, the whole machine is remotely accessed, not just the webcam. This includes access to files, pictures, banking, and a variety of other information.
Cost-Efficient Ways to keep Your Tech and Privacy Secure:
You've probably seen people with a piece of sticky tape, a post-it note, or a plaster over their laptop's camera in your local coffee shop - heck, even Facebook founder and billionaire Mark Zuckerberg does it. If you are not comfortable with tape you can also use a webcam cover slider that is easily available online.
You shouldn't put your trust in a "friend" you've never met who offers to "help you" with a problem using their own remote support app.
Do use secure passwords, and don't reuse old ones that have numbers added to them such as “Amelia2019” or “martin2019”. Make sure the antivirus and operating system applications are up to date as well.
